Surgical Nurse’s Accident Led To A Revolutionary Breakthrough In Foot Health

42-year-old Daurene works at a local hospital in Miami. As a surgical nurse, she is required to stand and walk for prolonged hours, constantly checking on patients, lifting them and pushing gurneys. Soon, the back-to-back shifts of up to 16 hours a day took a toll on her body.  She started experiencing crucial feet pain and needed breaks every 25 minutes. Sometimes her foot pain extends to her back, disrupting her sleep and affecting her performance at work the next day.

She collapsed and caused a 20-minute delay in surgery

In November 2019, while Daurene was assisting a crucial surgery. Suddenly, she felt an agonizing pain that hurt her to a point where she collapsed and knocked over a tray of surgical tools. As a result, the procedure had to be delayed as the tools needed to be sanitized again. Following that incident, what her head nurse said next pierced into her like a sword.

“You should know better that self-care is actually a responsibility. As written in the Code of Ethics, if you aren't caring for yourself, not only are you unable to care for others, you are putting them in greater danger. And for this, I have no choice but to let you go of this position.” – head nurse

Losing her job took a devastating toll on her

Being a single mom with 2 children to feed, she can’t afford to lose her job. In attempt to fix her feet, she went to see a podiatrist and was diagnosed with chronic plantar fasciitis.

“This problem involves inflammation of the arch tendon that runs across the bottom of your foot, known as fascia. It is typically caused by walking or standing for too long without rest. Your case is way too severe; the pain was too much for your body to handle. That’s probably why you fainted.” – podiatrist

Finding means to make things right again

According to the podiatrist, the fastest way to treat plantar fasciitis of this severity is plantar fasciotomy. It is a straight forward surgery to relieve her feet by releasing the arch tendon attached to the foot. However, knowing her financial condition, Daurene could not afford the surgery, so she tried other means: home remedies, medication, physiotherapies, yoga… but nothing worked! She was lost and helpless.

Until one afternoon at home, the doorbell rang.

Turns out, the real problem lies in our shoes!

It was her head nurse who had just returned from a medical conference in Belgium. She shared a breakthrough that she learnt from the conference. It was presented by renown podiatrist and researcher Dr. Janssens. According to Dr. Janssens, feet fatigue affects up to 89% of the population around the globe. And the real problem lies in our shoes.

“What we learnt is that the optimal footwear requires micro-cushioning. They also need flexibility that hugs our feet instead of adding weight to every step we take. According to our study, most of the modern shoes failed this requirement. We submitted this study to several major footwear manufacturers, but all they did was ignore.” – Dr. Janssens

Because a footwear that balances comfort and the right support are too costly to make, so shoe manufacturers rather give the illusion of comfort by loading up on cushioning. Although it improves shock absorption and thus provide incredible comfort, too much of it in turn weakens the muscles, ligaments and tendons in the feet and lower leg, which results in higher risks of foot fatigue and injuries like plantar fasciitis. The risks increase with age, especially for those who stands and walks for prolonged hours.

A revolutionary breakthrough in foot health came to rescue

Determined to make a change for the betterment of foot health, Dr. Janssens set out to create an alternative footwear that marries comfort and support. It turned out to be a pair of socks that functions as a supportive shoe.

Aware of Daurene’s situation, her head nurse brought back a pair for her. She wears them day and night, be it around the house, to the supermarket. And even for a walk at the beach or a swim in the sea.

Within days, she could stand and walk for 2 hours without resting. And there was no need for surgery anymore! Soon after, she got her job back, and managed to perform much better ever since.
